SWEMENA Conference 2022 – Building Networks across Sweden, the Middle East and North Africa

By bringing together researchers and practitioners from institutions across Sweden, this conference will discuss contributions handed in and presented by Sweden based researchers working on topics related to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. To do so, there will be several panels and roundtables held, and plenty of opportunities to network and discuss future collaborations.

The SWEMENA Conference mirrors the organization’s main cause: to bring together different communities of researchers, practitioners and policymakers across Sweden with an interest in the Middle East and North Africa region.

When: 13 June & 14 June 2022
Location: The School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg

SWEMENA Seminar: Introduction to the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database – Trends in the MENA region.

SIPRI conducts research on arms transfers to or from particular regions, states or non-state actors aimed at both increasing the fundamental understanding of the impact of arms transfers and to support policymaking and policy implementation. An important aim of SIPRI’s research is to contribute to greater transparency as a means of ensuring responsible international arms transfers, thereby helping to prevent violent conflict and warn about potentially destabilizing arms accumulations The SIPRI Arms Transfers Database is a core element of this work. Freely accessible online, it aims to provide valid, reliable and consistent data about the volume and types of major weapons.

This seminar aims to discuss the SIPRI Arms Transfer Database as a tool to identify trends and patterns in international arms transfers. By analyzing data on arms transfers, it will examine several case studies to investigate international arms transfers data in relation to international security and national foreign and defence policies and inter-state relations with a focus on MENA.
